As a community, part of our mission is to help support each other through trying and difficult times. Each Shiva is different, and each set of needs are different so there may be times that certain needs do not need to be met.
Still, we aim to provide as much as we can, as we move forward in our mission to comfort each other “to comfort all mourners… to give them splendor instead of ashes… so they will be called trees of righteousness, the planting of Hashem, that He may be glorified.”
Communal Notification
Our Shiva Committee prepares an email notification to go out to our email list detailing the Hebrew and English name of the deceased, and when available funeral, shiva, and minyan information. When appropriate, this email is shared with the Maimonides School email system as well.

Prayer Set-up
The Kehilah stocks many of the materials needed to arrange home prayer services: extra Sifrei Torah, extra Siddurim, special Shiva Siddurim, Tzedakah boxes, and Shiva Signs, which can be used to set up a portion of the Shiva home for daily Minyanim, when necessary.

Home Set-up
The Kehilah stocks Shiva chairs for mourners to sit on, which can be brought to the home for mourner’s use. The committee also stores brown paper tablecloths which can be essential for taping onto mirrors, should they be needed. (Please note: the shiva candle is not stocked by the kehilah, and should be procured from the funeral home. )

Minyan Facilitation
The Kehilah will ensure that a quorum is present at each scheduled Minyan – either by phoning Kehilah members, or by finding students to make Minyan in the winter months. The Shiva committee should be contacted early in the process to find most appropriate times. As a rule of thumb, Shacharit should be at 6:30AM (and if not that, then 8:00AM), Mincha and Maariv should be after 5:30PM (and if not that at 1:30PM).

Food
The Kehilah arranges for food for the meal after burial, and for Shiva, as appropriate for the give situation of mourning.

Shiva Times
Rabbi Jaffe is always available for assistance or to discuss any of these needs, and to help arrange limited visiting times for the shiva, if appropriate.
